Virtual training for dentists

Learning dentistry using a unique mixed reality simulation program.

J. Morita Corporation says its prototype allows trainee dentists to learn much of their trade virtually.

"Usually, we would have to use our imagination to determine the area that needs treatment, while looking at an x-ray, and then sync that information with what we are physically seeing in our patients. The merit behind this technology is that anyone can see the same information and implement treatment safely."

Other dental simulators have used either augmented reality or virtual reality , but never both together. Inside a head-mounted display, a stereo camera shows videos of oral cavities. Computer-generated images display information about the nerves and blood vessel s of teeth. Each patient's medical records and background information can also be seen. A commercial product could be ready within two years.

North Korea has conducted five nuclear tests, two of them last year, and is working to develop nuclear-tipped missiles that can reach the United States. It has also carried out a series of ballistic missile tests in defiance of United Nations sanctions. Adding to the strain, North Korea also detained a Korean-American man in his fifties Friday, bringing the total number of U.S.citizens held by Pyongyang to three. Sources say Tony Kim was in North Korea for a month teaching accounting at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology. He was arrested at the airport on his way out of the country.

Scientists take quantum leap with computer blueprint

Early quantum computer prototypes fill this lab at Sussex University. Scientists here have helped write the first practical blueprint for building a large-scale version.

Professor Winfried Hensinger, head of the Ion Quantum Technology group at the university of Sussex, saying: "Quantum computers really enable a whole new range of possible applications and it's very hard to predict right now what is the most powerful application. You can think of quantum computers as a similar industry revolution to conventional computers. So they're going to enable a whole new set of opportunities that you can never imagine you had before."

Quantum computers are the Holy Grail for computer scientists. But finding a workable method to make one has proved elusive. Professor Winfried Hensinger saying: "Traditionally people felt it would be unbelievably difficult to build a quantum computer and that is because you have to really enable these very strange quantum effects on a very large scale. So a use for a quantum computer may need millions or billions of individual bits - and traditionally people used laser beams in order to execute quantum gates. What we've done here at the University of Sussex is invented a new method where you can replace all these pairs of laser beams with voltages applied to a quantum microchip. And using this technique it is now much easier to build a large scale quantum computer." Such a computer would be the most powerful computer on Earth, capable of revolutionizing industry, science and commerce. It will take two years to build a small prototype. If successful, an up-scaled version potentially filling a building the width and length of a soccer pitch will follow.

Rich mining legacy is poisonous future in parts of South Africa

South Africa's Gauteng Province profited from the spoils of more than a century of gold mining. But now its residents are paying the price - with their health.

Around two thousand people live here surrounded by contaminated mine dumps - among them Janette, herself diagnosed with TB - the disease that killed her mother.

Janette Matshwisa, Tudor Shaft Resident, saying: "My mother is dead because of this place. She died in 2007. She was diagnosed with TB also. Then they told me that the dust is inside her lungs then she passed away."

Researchers say Tudor Shaft, on the outskirts of Krugersdorp is exposed to acid mine drainage, contaminated dust and radiation.

Mariette Liefferink, Federation for a sustainable environment, saying: "This Community has been exposed for decades, more than a decade to the dust fallout from the tailing storage facilities, the physical risks from open cast mining and blasting, as well as the staying on contaminated land. Some also grew their vegetables on contaminated soil. There is Radon exposure. There is both inhalation and ingestion of radioactive dust." Government efforts to clean up the area has been criticized as too little and too slow. National Nuclear Regulator / Orion Phillips, saying: "I do realize that there has… some time has elapsed. However, in our planning for this year, we've prioritized the cleanup operations to oversee the cleanup operations for the next two to three years." Mining companies are resisting a plan to charge them for cleaning up contaminated water sources. They say the cost would put an already ailing industry under further financial strain.

Greeks, migrants stage rally over EU-Turkey migrant deal

More than 2,000 Greeks and migrants staged a rally in Athens on Saturday (March 18) over a deal between the European Union and Turkey designed to stem the flow of undocumented migrants.

A year after the agreement took effect, men, women and children, including many migrants who have been stranded in Greece after the border closures along the Balkan 'migrant' route, took to the streets of the Greek capital and chanting "Open the borders" marched to the parliament and the offices of the European Union.

The protesters said that the EU-Ankara agreement was exposing people fleeing war, poverty and persecution to risk, abuse and harsh living conditions in the migrant camps and called on EU leaders to change their policies and cancel the deal. The EU-Ankara deal came into force on March 20, 2016 after more than a million refugees and migrants from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and beyond reached Europe in 2015, crossing over to Greek islands from Turkey. Under the deal, anyone who crosses into Greece without documents can be deported to Turkey unless they qualify for asylum in Greece. From the onset, the EU-Turkey agreement has been fiercely criticized by United Nations refugee and human rights agencies, as well as rights groups, as immoral and a violation of international humanitarian law against blanket returns.

Parrot named Gary could advance drone flight capability

Gary the mini parrot may hold the secrets to engineering better drones in the future. Researchers in California are studying how Gary morphs his wings during flight -- in the hopes of replicating his aerodynamic abilities.

The scientists use a projector to beam patterns of overlapping light on the bird. A camera, synced with the projector, then records Gary's flight. Using algorithms, the researchers then create a 3D reconstruction of his movements.

So far the research has revealed new insights on how birds manage their weight while producing lift during take-off.

Marc Deetjen, Stanford University researcher, saying: "In most normal aircraft, the angle of attack is about 10 degrees. But birds actually on takeoff use about 50 or 60 degrees angle of attack which is quite surprising because it seems like it's kind of inefficient." David Lentink, Stanford Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering, saying: "It's just mind boggling. And in the beginning it did not make much sense to us, but then we realized, oh wait they are switching the role of lift and drag here. Now drag, all of sudden, it's helping to support body weight and lift is rotated forward to propel the bird to generate trust." Future drones should be able to take off and fly more efficiently -- even in harsh conditions - all thanks to a mini-parrot named Gary.
