Wall Street eyes earnings, Netflix jumps after the bell

After the close, Netflix jumped on better than expected subscriber growth.

But Wall Street ended the day little changed as gains in utilities and consumer stocks offset declines in healthcare.

And organizers now say this will be the first and last time Netflix can compete, unless it gives its movies a cinema release. It's part of a wider industry dispute, that's seen the video on demand service rattle Hollywood by delivering TV shows and movies over the internet. In April the company topped 100 million global subscribers and it has plans to spend 6 billion dollars on programming this year. "They've become a big financier of films almost a new studio and so that's where the conflict exists and I don't know if Cannes or the rest of the cinema industry can force Netflix to change its model we're going to have to see." Another U.S. streaming service, Amazon, will also compete at Cannes, but it does sometimes screen films at cinemas and hasn't come under the same level of attack. Ultimately though, it's the public which will determine who comes out on top.
